The tempering process does not change the stiffness of the glass. Annealed glass undergoes a deflection compared to tempered glass under a similar load, but tempered glass can take a higher load and, therefore, deflects further before breaking. The material is generally between four to five times stronger than normal glass of the same thickness. Tempered glass also has a breakage pattern of small particles, that are much safer than the large and sharp pieces resulting from a broken lite of annealed glass. It is sometimes referred to it as safety glass.
Tempered glass is used traditionally in commercial applications where wind, snow or thermal loads exceed the strengths capabilities of heat-strengthened glass and in situations where tempered glass is mandated meeting legal regulations. Each item undergoes treatment to improve both strength and safety.
Of the total output of flat glass produced each year, approximately 95% is high-quality glass that will be processed into other products by way of further treatments such as laminating, toughening, and then assembling into insulating glass units. The global market for flat glass in 2009 was around 52 million tonnes (Source: NSG Group).
